Input on the Modernisation of Australia’s Free Trade Agreements in Southeast Asia
June 2025
Our feedback on Australia’s initiative to modernise its Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) in Southeast Asia proposes a strategic “green-digital nexus” to future-proof trade policy. Developed by the DigitalTrade4.EU consortium, this submission recommends embedding digital interoperability (e.g., UNCITRAL MLETR, Digital Product Passports), sustainability transparency, and MSME empowerment into bilateral and regional agreements like SAFTA, IA-CEPA, RCEP, and CPTPP. By aligning with frameworks such as DEPA and the EU’s green-digital standards, Australia can enhance trade resilience, unlock green finance, and position itself as a trusted digital and sustainability partner in the Indo-Pacific.
